Job Description
Reporting to the Superintendent, Maintenance, the Instrumentation/Electrical Technologist in the FNO Maintenance department has a key leadership role in the designing, installation and maintenance of the instrumentation systems. This Technologist is responsible for providing technical support to the maintenance and operations groups and leads the development of instrumentation systems on Capital and Management (M.O.C.) related to projects.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Technical resource for the maintenance and operation of the instrument systems.
- Planning and engineering for the installation of conventional and micro-processor based instrumentation, including specification, sizing, wiring and configuration design, and documentation.
- Assisting the Instrument Technicians in the solving of day-to-day instrumentation problems, governor systems and PLC hardware trouble-shooting.
- Providing project / M.O.C. support on instrumentation systems design and installation, including PLC programming.
- Providing trouble-shooting support for application database and operator interface configuration on the DCS. Includes controller interface tuning/problem solving.
- Leading continuous improvement of instrumentation technology and standards, with responsibility for the development and maintenance of long-term plans.
- Providing mentorship and direction for Instrumentation and Electical Technicians.
- Caretaking of plant instrumentation documentation systems and P&ID’s instrumentation support.
Qualifications of the position include:
- An Instrumentation Technology Diploma with 10 years of related experience is required and must be either formally registered as or be eligible to be licensed as a Professional Technologist, Registered Technologist or Certified Technologist in the Province of Alberta by ASET. Confirmation of eligibility is required for all applicants.
- Preference will be given for dual Journeyman Red Seal certification in Instrumentation and Electrical
- Familiar with instruments associated with rotating and heavy industrial equipment.
- Strong knowledge of analyzers and governor systems would be an asset.
- Excellent Computer Skills (ie: MS Office and SAP) are necessary.
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
- Familiarity with DCS, PLCs, industrial networking, SIL and safety trip systems are considered an asset.

Fort Saskatchewan Nitrogen Operations produces Anhydous Ammonia and Urea, Total ammonia production capacity at Fort Saskatchewan is 465,000 gross (220,000 net) tonnes. Total nitrogen product capacity is 650,000 tonnes. The Fort Saskatchewan Storage Facility can store 38,000 tonnes of Ammonia and 65,000 tonnes of dry storage.
