Earlier this spring Enbridge held its 2015 PCSLD (Pipeline Control Systems and Leak Detection) Town Hall & Trade Show. On March 25, 2015, over 150 Enbridge employees gathered at the Sutton Place Hotel for a day dedicated to learning.
The ISA Edmonton Section sat down with ISA Influencer, Dion D. Dubé, Director of Pipeline Control Systems at Enbridge Pipelines, to find out more about Enbridge’s internal approach to employee education.
Why did Enbridge start hosting an educational conference for its employees?
When our department was formed in 2010 we felt it was necessary to get everyone together to share our vision, our goals and our successes. Over time this concept has morphed into an annual town hall where we now have a conference with three tracks of presentations, a poster session and a tradeshow.
How does Enbridge select the topics for its conference?
The topics for the conference are all areas of interest for our department and are submitted by our employees. Generally the hard part is selecting from the large list of great ideas.
What were the “hot” topics at this year’s conference?
In the area of Pipeline Control Systems, this year’s hot topics were cyber security, alarm management, high performance HMIs, and human factors considerations.
Which “hot” topic do you predict will be even “hotter” by next year?
I predict that the cyber security and alarm management topics will continue to be hot topics due to their ongoing importance both in our industry and in all industries in general.
What was your favourite topic?
My favourite topic was the high performance HMI topic as I am always amazed how proper presentation of information can allow someone to make the correct decision in the least amount of time.
What was your biggest “aha” moment at this year’s conference?
Always the ‘aha’ moment is just to observe how engaged our employees are when they get a chance to speak about the work they do and how proud they are of their accomplishments. This sort of energy and enthusiasm is infectious!
Which presentation inspired you the most and why?
The presentation that inspired me the most was on the topic of cyber security as the two presenters were a bit apprehensive to stand in front of a large group of people and deliver their presentation. They did a fantastic job and even surprised themselves with how well it went and how they felt energized and engaged after they were done.
Which topic do you plan to read up on / learn more about?
The science of human factors is something that is really interesting to me. I definitely plan on learning more about this subject as I think it is important for almost everything we do at work and at home.
