The third year of the ISA Edmonton Section Mentorship Program was a tremendous success. A total of 10 mentees graduated from the program last month. Brett Parada, a recent graduate of NAIT's Instrumentation Engineering Technology program is our featured mentee - he has already landed himself a job with NOVA Chemicals in Joffree, just east of Red Deer.
We caught up with Brett to find out more about his ISA Edmonton Section Mentorship Program experience as well as his new job!
Why did you apply for the ISA Edmonton Section Mentorship Program?
I applied because I heard it was a valuable tool to search for and further a career.
Who was your mentor and how did he help you?
My mentor was Jon Meyer; he worked for Enbridge. He helped me gain insight on industry that helped me find a career. I was introduced to professionals in my field and given insight on starting my new career.
Tell us about your new job! What company do you work for? What is your job title? What are your responsibilities?
I work for NOVA Chemicals at the Joffre sight as an Apprentice Instrument Technician. My job involves performing maintenance on equipment, using data sheets and drawings to aid understanding of a certain project, and troubleshooting equipment within the plant.
Do you have any advice for students that are going to be looking for a job in the automation industry?
Start networking as early as possible and get to know as many industry professionals as you can. It helped me with both my schooling and with finding a career.
Do you have any advice for our 2018/2019 ISA Mentorship Program Mentees? How can they maximize this opportunity?
Getting a head start on resumes, job applications, etc. is essential; especially because your mentor can help you better achieve these milestones. Maximize this opportunity by putting in the effort it takes to do this, as well as make time to communicate with your mentor.
